It operates in partnership with a local church, Redeemed Church, Maluku, reaching out to a local slum community, where there is high unemployment, prevalent alcohol abuse (its main industry is brewing alcohol), and where few children attend school and many girls are married or pregnant by their mid teens.  Beersheba was set up after a 6-month long research project into the needs of communities in Mbale, and the data revealed that young teenage girls were particularly vulnerable and few organisations were focusing on this target group. The Project began to tackle the girls’ needs through an education programme in Musoto, a peri-urban slum community in which there is little or no development.

Education at Beersheba

The Education Programme at Beersheba seeks to pass on important life skills to vulnerable girls to equip them to make healthy life choices and avoid the pitfalls of life in Musoto. In addition to interactive and creative life skills classes, literacy and numeracy lessons are held to improve their reading and writing skills. The project targets girls who have dropped out of school and are aged 13– 16, and they come to the project four days a week from 9am to 5pm. The length of the course is 1 year.

Beersheba Community Development Project

In order to have a lasting impact in the lives of the girls, their families and the wider community of Musoto are also involved in a variety of programmes that Beersheba runs. The overall aim of the Project is to equip and empower vulnerable people in this community so they can live positive and healthy lives. Our major community activities include

  • Training workshops run in partnership with other organisations in life skills and parental skills, HIV/AIDS awareness, animal husbandry
  • Children’s group activities including a kids’ clubs and a boys’ football club
  • Economic empowerment in the form of goat and chicken rearing

The demonstration garden has been set up to teach local farmers how best to grow produce and investigations into sourcing clean and safe water supplies are still going on.

We are very grateful for everyone who supports our work and we would like to thank Operation Agri and Grace Church for partnering with us in bringing a difference in the girls' lives and their families too.
